It was Figawi weekend, and the wharves were full of color and boats in the late afternoon light. "After the Race" was painted in the studio as the strong winds and the activity on the wharves made it impossible for me to paint en plein air, which I would have loved to do. Relying on memory and photographs, this large piece was painted with a combination of palette knife and brush, depicting one of my favorite times of day to be on the wharf. In the late afternoon, the warm light illuminates the masts and the boats at the end of the wharf, while the boats in the foreground are in shadow, only their masts still touched by the sunlight. The water is a beautiful shade of blue reflecting the clear sky above.
